Cove at Home 2014 – dinghies

Cove SC burgeeWe had a really good day today with Cove’s Junior sailors racing out on the Spit Bank for this years Cove at Home.12 boats, with a good mix of ages and experience came to the start line which was set just off the number 20 bouy. The southerly breeze picked up at about the right time and the rain threatened but held off until after we’d finished.

The OD’s got the first race started dead on time at 2.05PM. A triangular course was set across the bank and we managed to fit in 3 good races and get off the Bank well before the outgoing tide caused anyone any concern. Over the course of the 3 races the starts improved, racing was closer and all boats improved on their times. The racing was extremely close with often only seconds between several boats once the handicaps had been applied.

In the end experience showed with the Ewan, Rob, Cormac trio sharing the top 3 spots over the water in every race and taking the overall top 3 places on adjusted time. John Doyle finished 4th overall in his Rankin. Young Chris was awarded the prize for the best Cove boat of the day. All the Juniors, however, should be very pleased with how well they performed in what were tricky conditions at times and hopefully they will be encouraged to continue developing their sailing/racing skills and they will get further opportunities to put what they’ve learned in to practice.

Many thanks go to Rob and Colin for the support they gave the Juniors on the water. Melissa and Michelle for the on-shore organisation and much needed after racing refreshments, and Race Officers Niall and Aiden.
