Round Ireland Race 2014

Cove SC burgeeThe other big news for Cove this week is that Rob Scandrett has been selected to crew on “Monster Project”, a Volvo 70 offshore racing machine, in this years Round Ireland Race hosted by Wicklow Sailing Club.

Rob won his place at a selection process up at Howth Yacht club. He was one of three selected out of a 100 or so entrants and has spent the last couple of months training with the Monster Project crew.

Monster Project is aiming for line honours and with the right conditions (basically howling gales) is capable of challenging the Round Ireland Race record of under 3 days currently held by the 100′ long “Leopard3”.

The real driving force behind this initiative is the need to raise funds for the “Care for Shane” charity and the team are hoping that the publicity generated by competing in this years Round Ireland will give a huge bost to this cause. Cove Sailing club will be holding a fund raising event shortly to show our support for Rob and the Monster Project Team so please look out for details.

In the meantime you can follow their progress in the Round Ireland Race (click link).

There is also a dedicated Monster Project wesbite which explains in more detail the background to the whole project.

We’d like to wish Rob and the Monster Project all the best for the race and have a safe trip.
