End of Season Laying Up Supper 2014 – roundup

Cove SC burgee

Our End of Season Laying Up Supper took place on Friday Night at the Titanic Bar and Grill, Cobh. The place was packed and there was a definite buzz around the bar as the 110 or so members, family and friends gathered for the traditional end of season prize-giving and all-round general celebration of the season just passed. Cove Sailing Club Commodore Adrian Tyler  introduced our special guest for the evening, the Royal Cork Yacht Club’s Rear Admiral Kieran O’Connell and after a brief welcome and run through the plan for the evening we all sat down to a very enjoyable dinner served by the ever helpful Titanic staff.

For the skippers and crews however, that was really only the warm up to the main event of the evening – the annual prize-giving. Before announcing the overall season league winners and the 4 big club awards, and just to add to the excitement a little we awarded a couple of trophies that we’d not been able to give out earlier in the season for one reason or another including the Titanic and Moonduster Trophies.

We then paid tribute to some of the special achievements of our members during the year including Rob Scandrett for winning his place on “Monster Project” and going on to compete in this years Round Ireland Race. David O’Flynn for winning Monkstown’s October League (class 2), Musketeer (1st Calves Week, class 3 IRC), Jedi (1st RCYC at Home and RCYC October League, class 2 IRC & Echo) plus a few others. A special presentation was made to Jo and Eddie English in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of SailCork.

After the September League presentations we were finally on to the main trophies of the evening. Starting off with the dinghies, Cian Synnot enjoyed a great year finishing first in both the Midweek and Weekend dinghy Leagues. Former Commodore of Cove Sailing Club, Eddie English presented him with the “Jim Hennessey Trophy” and the “Mary English Trophy” named in honour of his mother, also a former Commodore of our Club. In the cruisers, Gaelic Kiwi came first in the “Kites” IRC League and White Knight took the “Kites” ECHO League. In whitesail Mystic took the trophy just ahead of Chanteuse with Wader in third.

The Club Boat of the Year trophy was awarded to Gaelic Kiwi who had dominated class 3 IRC racing throughout the season. The Club Junior of the Year trophy was awarded to Cian Synnot for his performance both racing and as an assistant Instructor. Club Person of the Year was awarded to Rob Pasley for his hard work and support particularly in developing our dinghy racing program which has seen significant success this year.

Lastly Cove Sailing Club’s most prestigious trophy, The Foley Rose Bowl was awarded to Cove Sailing Club boat “Illes Pitiuses” (Jason and Dominic Losty) in recognition of their remarkable season which included 16th place out of over 1500 boats in the Round the Island Race. Winning the Corinthian Cup, and finishing 5th overall at this years Coutts Quarter Ton Cup over in Cowes. Taking 9 1sts in all 9 races in class 5 at Cork Week and finishing off their season by winning the Irish Quarter Ton Cup up in Dublin. Fantastic stuff.
