Announcement : Joe English RIP

Joe English

It is with great sadness that Cove Sailing Club has to inform its members that Joe English passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon following his long battle with illness.

Joe English learnt to sail in Cobh and later RCYC. He went on to become one of Ireland’s greatest sailors, successfully competing in some of the world’s biggest competitions, including the Whitbread Round the World Race and the America’s Cup amongst others. His association with Cork Harbour and Cobh ran deep where his parents (Mary and Eamonn) and his brother Eddie all served as Commodores of Cove Sailing Club.

There are many fitting tributes published in todays press which highlight Joe’s life and career far better than we can including: The Examiner, The Irish Times,  David Brannigan (Scuttlebut Sailing News), and Claire Bateman (RCYC)

The Funeral arrangements are as follows. Reception into St. Brigid’s Church, Crosshaven, on Wednesday at 6.30pm. Requiem Mass on Thursday at 11.30am. Funeral afterwards to St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Crosshaven. Family flowers only. Donations in lieu to Alzheimers Society.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Joe’s wife and children, his extended family and all his friends across the world.
